At the convention to mark the 30th anniversary of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles, its Founder and General Overseer, Dr Daniel Olukoya, revealed that he got the vision to start the church while living in one-bedroom apartment in Yaba area of Lagos in 1977.

Olukoya, a molecular geneticist, while speaking in a sermon entitled “Rearranged for Revival” said though he got the revelation from God that year, the church did not start until 12 years after.

“I was sleeping in my one-room apartment in the Boys Quarters of a house located on Hebert Macaulay Way, Yaba, in 1977, when I heard a sharp voice. I then woke up and walked towards the door. But I did not see anybody.

“Again, for the second time, the voice came and as I was wondering whose it was, the Holy Spirit said, ‘son remember the call of Samuel.’ Then He started giving the covenant that led to the establishment of the MFM.”

The fellowship grew after that fateful Wednesday in 1989 when 24 people gathered for a prayer meeting.

“After that meeting, the voice of providence kept calling for subsequent meetings,” according to the information posted on its website.

“At these meetings, the power of God came down and verifiable miracles began to happen in the lives of the attending brethren. The power of God to evangelise the prayer meetings and a spiritual explosion began with people coming from far and wide to seek the face of God.

“With more and more people attending the prayer meetings, a larger location was required. The prayer meetings moved to 60 Old Yaba Road, Yaba, Lagos. Here, the teeming crowd to believers grew in even more amazing proportion necessitating yet another relocation.”

It was during one of the prayer meetings that the name Mountain of Fire and Miracles was revealed to Olukoya.

The church first its service on April 24, 1994.

Today, MFM has over 300 branches in every corner of the world with international headquarters along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The ministry also runs a university known as Mountain Top University and a football team.

As stated on its website, MFM ministries is devoted to the Revival of Apostolic signs, wonders and miracles, Holy Ghost fireworks and the unlimited demonstration of the power of God to deliver to the uttermost.

The church teaches absolute holiness as a requirement for making Heaven. It is reputed for aggressive deliverance prayer which Christians are taught to do it themselves.

As Olukoya himself said, MFM is “a do-it-yourself Gospel ministry where your hands are trained to wage war and your fingers to do battle, in prayers and supplication.”

MFM has not only become one of the greatest deliverance ministries in the world, it is also in the task of preparing people for the second coming of Christ.
