Church attacks rise across France amid Christianophobia warnings

With Christian churches facing fire threats and attacks, France is seeing a rise in hatred against believers. What does this mean for us who still stand firm?

An increased number of attacks targeting churches and clergy across France have raised concerns over a surge in what is deemed “Christianophobia.” Recent incidents include physical assaults, threats of arson, and desecration of churches, The Christian Post reported.

Shortly after celebrating evening mass on May 10 at the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Repos church in Montfavet, near Avignon, a group of young men, believed to be between 15 and 20 years old, shouted anti-Christian insults and yelled “Allahu Akbar” before threatening Fr. Laurent Milan that they would burn down the church.

The priest subsequently filed a police report, and authorities stood outside the church the next day to secure the Sunday mass.

Three days prior to the incident, Fr. Milan told the French daily newspaper La Provence that another group interrupted a parish meeting at the church and was banging on the windows. At the same time, however, he says that the attack wasn’t personal but directed against the Catholic faith.

Earlier this month, a church in Saint-Aygulf, southern France, was broken into, including the tabernacle being ripped open, and the Eucharist was removed. Additional recent attacks include the vandalism of the parish hall of Saint-Laurent in Maurepas, south of Paris, and in Rennes at the church of Saint Jean Marie Vianney in separate incidents.

In a recent intelligence report, 31% of religiously motivated offenses in France in 2024 were classified as anti-Christian, with a 30% increase in arson attacks on Christian places of worship. Meanwhile, there was a 62% increase in antisemitic acts, while anti-Muslim incidents made up 7%.

OIDAC Europe, a watchdog group, warned last November that anti-Christian hate crimes in Europe reached approximately 2,444 instances in 2023, with about 1,000 of those attacks occurring in France. Notably, 90% of these attacks targeted graves and churches. In 2023, French officials reported 84 specific personal attacks.

According to the Got Questions, “Christianophobia” refers to hatred and hostility of believers rather than a fear of Christianity. This type of behavior ridicules or discriminates against Christians and what they represent.

“Few would admit an actual emotional hatred for Christians. Admittedly, the hatred that Christians endure in most of the world is relatively mild. But the Christianophobia in the world today is simply a foretaste of what is to come. As the world increasingly turns away from God, the hatred of God’s people will increase exponentially,” the ministry explained.
