The Nigerian government has denied claim by some United Kingdom parliamentarians that it was allowing armed Islamist groups to kill, maim and displace Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n The denial was contained in a statement by a presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Friday June 19.<\/span><\/p>\n The parliamentarians under the aegis of UK All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion and Belief (APPG), in a report on June 15, alleged that the Nigerian government was allowing armed Islamist groups to kill, maim and displace Christians, through a systematic cleansing.<\/span><\/p>\n The report, titled \u201cNigeria \u2013 Unfolding Genocide?\u201d, painted a picture of an ongoing religious\/ethnic cleansing ongoing in Nigeria, with government doing almost nothing to end it.<\/span><\/p>\n It said the cleansing was particularly targeted at northern Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAttacks by armed groups of Islamist Fulani herdsmen have resulted in the killing, maiming, dispossession and eviction of thousands of Christians,\u201d the APPG said.<\/span><\/p>\n The Nigerian government in the statement said, \u201cAlthough it is difficult reading, the statement also acknowledges the importance of accurate, unbiased, depoliticised and truthful information when it comes to understanding the realities and addressing the challenges for those of faith in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn this regard when uncritical attention is afforded to critics with dubious intentions, it only becomes harder for both the government and people of Nigeria to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve our differences, and uphold what is enshrined in our Constitution and laws: that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n The statement said there had been an age-long tensions between Christianity and Islam as well as herders and farmers, saying they were not new. <\/span><\/p>\n The government said the struggle for access to ever-decreasing arable and farmland was the reason herders and farmers clashed repeatedly.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cExacerbating those tensions, our nation has also been in recent times and focused within the northern states \u2013 subject to vicious and criminal attacks by the terror group Boko Haram.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn concert with our American and British allies, Nigeria\u2019s military have pushed back the terrorists and largely reduced their capacity over the last five years compared to the previous decade,\u2019\u2019 he maintained.<\/span><\/p>\n The government said the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram had been targeting Christians and Churches specifically because they know it drives forward religious and land tensions already existent in the country, saying the sect also attacked mosques and Muslims in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn the months and years ahead, our President who is Muslim and our Vice President who is an evangelical Christian pastor are irrevocably committed to addressing these multiple and long-term challenges for today\u2019s and future generations. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThese include:<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Continuing and increasing Nigeria\u2019s efforts alongside our allies to fully defeat and finally finish Boko Haram, in order to bring security to the north of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Continuing to seek, negotiate for, and secure the return of all those held hostage and in captivity by the terrorists, regardless of the religious faith or belief.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Uniting our nation through dialogue organised around respect for difference in religion. Such a programme is already underway under the leadership of the Vice President, Pastor Yemi Osinbajo.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Addressing, through Joint Federal and State Governments programmes, access to arable farmland \u2013 with land mandated both for farmers and herders. The federal government will issue detailed measures regarding this plan and its rollout in the coming weeks<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Countering fake news \u2013 particularly on social and digital media \u2013 by working with the non-partisan stakeholder community, the National Broadcasting Commission and social media platforms themselves, to address the proliferation of false and inflammatory commentary.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n The government also said it looked forward to welcoming members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group to Nigeria to \u201csee for themselves the work that is going on to promote these fundamental rights of our citizens.\u2019\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The Nigerian government has denied claim by some United Kingdom parliamentarians that it was allowing armed Islamist groups to kill, maim and displace Christians.
