{"id":871,"date":"2020-05-26T12:39:10","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T11:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=871"},"modified":"2020-05-26T12:39:10","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T11:39:10","slug":"egypt-grants-legal-status-to-70-churches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=871","title":{"rendered":"Egypt grants legal status to 70 churches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_868\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-868\" style=\"width: 142px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-868\" src=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Map-of-Egypt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Map-of-Egypt.jpg 142w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Map-of-Egypt-75x75.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map of Egypt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Egyptian authorities have granted legal status to 70 churches, bringing the total number of churches legalised since 2017 to 1,638, The Christian Post has reported.<\/p>\n<p>This granting of legal status was sequel to a recommendation of the Committee for the Legalisation of Unlicensed Churches headed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.<\/p>\n<p>The committee comprises the minister of justice, parliamentary affairs, and local development and housing as well as local representatives of local authorities and Christian communities.<\/p>\n<p>The committee has however been criticised for being slow in recognising churches.<\/p>\n<p>Islam remains the major religion in the North African country.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, Christianity is still seen as a threat in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Open Doors USA, in its report, in January ranked Egypt as the 16<sup>th<\/sup> worst country in the world where Christian are persecuted.<\/p>\n<p>It said, \u201cMany Egyptian Christians encounter substantial roadblocks to living out their faith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are violent attacks that make news headlines around the world, but there are also quieter, more subtle forms of duress that burden Egyptian believers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticularly in rural areas in northern Egypt, Christians have been chased from villages, and subject to mob violence and intense familial and community pressure.
