Why are we giving KSh 20 million to a church when we have no jobs? Universities are closing, and our future is at stake,\u201d Joshua, a Gen Z protester, told <em>Citizen Digital<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of the violence, the church services progressed amid tight security.<\/p>\n<p>About 38 of the youth were arrested and detained at Kasarani Police Station for participating in the protest. We, ourselves, contribute even 40 KSh million to the church,\u201d John Warui, another member of the church, told BBC.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donation made to curtail moral decay &#8211; Ruto<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ruto, an evangelical Christian, has defended his action and even went ahead to make similar donation to another church in Eldoret.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2264\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2264\" src=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/President-William-Ruto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"183\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President William Ruto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Nation newspaper quoted the president as saying at Eldoret church that the donation was made in an attempt to address the country\u2019s moral decay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKenya must know God so that we shame the people who are telling us that we cannot associate with the church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, leaders of Catholic and Anglican churches rejected donations, arguing that there was a need to shield the church from being used for political purposes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenyans groaning under tax raise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since it assumed power in 2022, the Ruto administration has introduced a tax regime, angering Kenyans.<\/p>\n<p>The president had argued that the tax increments were needed to pay off debts incurred by the previous Uhuru Kenyatta\u2019s government.
