{"id":2074,"date":"2024-11-12T21:09:28","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T20:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=2074"},"modified":"2024-11-12T21:13:44","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T20:13:44","slug":"archbishop-of-canterbury-resigns-over-child-abuse-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=2074","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0  Archbishop of Canterbury resigns over child abuse scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2073\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2073\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2073\" src=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Archbishop-Justin-Welby-300x169.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Archbishop-Justin-Welby-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Archbishop-Justin-Welby-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Archbishop-Justin-Welby-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Archbishop-Justin-Welby-750x422.webp 750w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Archbishop-Justin-Welby-1140x641.webp 1140w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Archbishop-Justin-Welby.webp 1462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archbishop Justin Welby<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has resigned from his position.<\/p>\n<p>Welby, the global head of the Anglican Church, resigned on Tuesday November 12 over his handling of a child abuse case.<\/p>\n<p>He was said to have covered up the abuse of over 100 boys and young men by a deceased member of the church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving sought the gracious permission of His Majesty the King, I have decided to resign as Archbishop of Canterbury,\u201d the clergyman said in a statement on his official account.<\/p>\n<p>Welby came under pressure to quit in the last few days after an independent review into the abuse committed by a deceased British lawyer, John Smyth, alleged to be a serial abuser linked to the Church of England.<\/p>\n<p>The independent report, released on November 7, indicated a cover up of a serious crime committed by the late lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>It said despite repeated efforts by individuals to bring Smyth\u2019s actions to light, the church\u2019s response was inadequate.<\/p>\n<p>In his resignation letter, Welby said the review \u201chas exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuse of John Smyth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the last few days have renewed his long-felt and profound sense of shame at the historic safeguarding failures of the Church of England.<\/p>\n<p>The clergyman said for nearly 12 years, he struggled to introduce improvements and that it is left for others to judge what has been done.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cWhen I was informed in 2013 and told that police had been notified, I believed wrongly than an appropriate resolution would follow. It is very clear that I must take personal and institutional responsibility for the long and retraumatizing period between 2013 and 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Welby acknowledged the impact of the review\u2019s findings, as well as the pain endured by the victims and the failures of the church to protect those in its care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so sorry that in places where these young men, and boys, should have felt safe and where they should have experienced God\u2019s love for them, they were subjected to physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual abuse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Welby, 67, is a former oil executive. His tenure has been characterised by disagreement over same-sex relationship, which has caused disunity in the church.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smyth\u2019s crime <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Smyth perpetrated traumatic physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual attacks on about 130 boys and young men. The crime spanned from the 1970s up until his death in South Africa in 2018, reports said.<\/p>\n<p>He allegedly abused his own family members, as well as attendees of evangelical Christian summer camps he ran for students from British\u2019s prestigious private colleges in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Welby also worked at the summer camps which Smyth was running.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Smyth\u2019s abuse was exposed by Channel 4 News.<\/p>\n<p>When Welby rose to the highest rank, he told the media that he did not ensure the allegations were pursued as energetically and remorsefully as they should have been.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Church of England<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Church of England traces its history back to the arrival of Christianity in Britain in the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>Henry VIII began the process of creating the church after his split with the Pope in the 1530\u2019s.
