{"id":2065,"date":"2024-10-31T18:21:41","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T17:21:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=2065"},"modified":"2024-10-31T18:21:57","modified_gmt":"2024-10-31T17:21:57","slug":"nigerian-lawmakers-want-airstrip-licence-granted-megachurch-withdrawn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=2065","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian lawmakers want airstrip licence granted megachurch withdrawn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2066\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2066\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2066\" src=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/House-of-Representatives-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/House-of-Representatives-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/House-of-Representatives-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/House-of-Representatives-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/House-of-Representatives-75x75.jpg 75w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/House-of-Representatives-750x750.jpg 750w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/House-of-Representatives.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">House of Representatives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nigerian lawmakers on Wednesday October 30 voted to strip the Living Faith Church (LFC), private individuals and other non-governmental organisations withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>LFC, also known as Winners Chapel, founded by Bishop David Oyedepo, is one of Nigeria\u2019s largest and richest churches.<\/p>\n<p>On October 6, Oyedepo, believed\u00a0to own two private\u00a0jets, had informed the congregation during the Tehillah Night Special edition at Covenant University Chapel, Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State, that the Nigerian government had approved an airstrip for the church.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1130\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1130\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1130\" src=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/David-Oyedepo-Pix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"119\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bishop David Oyedepo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But members of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Nigerian National Assembly, passed a resolution, asking the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace to withdraw the licence and stop the issuance of such licences to private individuals and organisations, citing security reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution followed a motion by Sulaiman Gumi, a member of the House.<\/p>\n<p>The motion was titled, \u2018\u2019Need to stop issuance of airstrip licence to private individuals and organisations in the country.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Presenting the motion, Gumi, a northern Muslim, said \u2018\u2019Recall that in September 2014, a prominent religious leader was linked with a private jet used to convey $9.3m in cash to South Africa for the purchase of arms. The private jet which was seized by the South African authorities had two Nigerians and an Israeli on board (Sahara Reporters, 16<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0September 2014).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019The country currently experiences security challenges through illegal importation\/proliferation of firearms and ammunition, importation of illicit drugs, coupled with the inability of our security agencies to pinpoint the source of supply of weapons to insurgents, kidnappers and separatists that have massacred thousands of Nigerians across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019Granting airstrips to private individuals and organisations will aid illegal importation of firearms and hard drugs into the country, thus heightening insurgency, kidnapping, banditry and other vices that are seriously affecting the socio-economic development of the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The motion was adopted by the lawmakers and referred to the Committees on Aviation and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance\/<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Nigerian lawmakers on Wednesday October 30 voted to strip the Living Faith Church (LFC), private individuals and other non-governmental organisations withdrawn.
