{"id":1356,"date":"2022-06-21T17:18:22","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T16:18:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=1356"},"modified":"2022-06-21T17:30:01","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T16:30:01","slug":"22-christians-killed-in-nigerian-catholic-church-buried","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/?p=1356","title":{"rendered":"22 Christians killed in Nigerian Catholic church buried"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1351\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1351\" src=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/St-Francis-Catholic-Church-Owo-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/St-Francis-Catholic-Church-Owo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/St-Francis-Catholic-Church-Owo-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/St-Francis-Catholic-Church-Owo-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/St-Francis-Catholic-Church-Owo-750x422.jpg 750w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/St-Francis-Catholic-Church-Owo-1140x641.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/thechristian.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/St-Francis-Catholic-Church-Owo.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Victims of the deadly attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, South West Nigeria, have been buried.<\/p>\n<p>Some gunmen suspected to be terrorists on June 5 attacked the church leaving about 40 worshippers, including children, dead.<\/p>\n<p>The church was about ending the day\u2019s service when the gunmen stormed the premises shooting sporadically and releasing explosives.<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify; line-height: 19.75pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; color: #333333; background: white;\">The Nigerian government had on June 9 identified the Islamic State, West African Province (ISWAP) for being responsible for the attack on the church.<\/span><\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"margin-top: 0in; text-align: justify; line-height: 19.75pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: 'Georgia',serif; color: #333333; background: white;\">Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, told journalists after the meeting of the National Security Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja that security agencies were already on the trail of attackers.<\/span><\/h6>\n<h6>The victims, numbering 22, were buried on June 17 in the Emure community of the ancient town amid tears by family members and friends.<\/h6>\n<p>They were buried after a funeral liturgy for the dead, whose remains had been deposited in the mortuary of the St. Catholic Hospital, Owo.<\/p>\n<p>Families of the dead took their corpses to be buried in the town after the funeral mass.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the burial ceremony, Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, government failed in its duty to protect the lives of the victims, adding that the attackers had backers.<\/p>\n<p>Stating that he lacked words to describe the incident, the governor said evil would not prevail over the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have failed to defend these people. Not because we have not tried, but because these forces on the other side are evil and they have supports. They will not triumph over us forever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I see the sea of heads here it speaks volumes. What has happened to us in Owo, in Ondo State is indescribable. A lot of words are used to qualify it \u2013 dastardly, horrendous \u2013 but I still believe there are words to use to describe it but I\u2019m still short of those words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have just 22 (deceased) in this hall. A few of them have been buried because the relatives couldn\u2019t wait till today. But as at the last count, these animals came to the church and murdered 40 people,\u201d Akeredolu, who is an indigene of the town, said.<\/p>\n<p>The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ondo, Jude Arogundade, expressed bitterness over the attack, adding that the attack underscored the need for state police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do the people of this country need to beg for state police, despite the endless attacks and killings?\u201d he queried.<\/p>\n<p>Arogundade thanked Akeredolu for designating a memorial park in honour of the victims, adding that the killers had blood on their hands.<\/p>\n<p>The Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, asked Christians in the country to remain strong in the face growing attacks.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cWe remain hopeful about the future of our country which is in the hands of God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere we are now is not Nigeria; we don\u2019t recognise our country any longer but again we have nowhere to turn to except to look up to God. We are prayerfully hoping on the power of God more than any person can talk about.
