Pope endorses same-sex marriage

Pope Francis

Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, has thrown his weight behind same sex marriage, Premium Times has reported.

“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it,” the pope said in a new documentary film, “Francesco.”

Francesco is directed by Russian filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky.

The Catholic News Agency (CNN) reported that the film premiered at the Rome Film Festival on October 21.

The film also explores the Pope’s work and views in other issues, including climate change, migration and economic equality, its website said.

“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered,” the Pope stated further.

Pope Francis, whose name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, has been subtly supporting gay marriage since his enthronement in 2013.

The BBC had quoted the pontiff then as saying, “The key is for the church to welcome, not exclude, and show mercy, not condemnation. If a person is gay and seeks God and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”

As archbishop of Buenos Aires before his ascension as pope, Francis supported same sex union.
