Nigerian pastor suggests ways to tackle country’s security challenges

Adeboye, the 83-year-old general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), said the expansion and infrastructure upgrade had become necessary to accommodate the growing human pressure on the facilities in the city.

He spoke on August 6 during the 73rd Convention of the church, which ended on Sunday August 10.

The convention was attended by millions of the church members across the globe.

Adeboye said the project would cost billions of naira and urged sons of daughters of the church to make donations.

While noting that only people willing to contribute towards the project should do so, the respected clergyman said he would need 10 people who could give N1 billion each, 100 people who could give N100 million each, and 1,000 people who could give a million naira each.

He also urged church’s members to give the amounts they could afford.

Although the GO did not ask potential donors to identify themselves, he, however, urged them to write their cheques in favour of the “RCCG Redemption City Project.”

About Redemption City

Redemption City, also called Redemption Camp, is the international headquarters of the RCCG.

Located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Mowe Ogun State, South West Nigeria, construction of the city began in February 1983, two years after Adeboye assumed the leadership of the church, which now has branches in almost all the countries of the world.

Redeemed City

At the time, the construction began, the camp was sitting on mere four acres of land but has since expanded to 2,000 hectares.

There are about 13 residential estates in the city. At of 2018, it was hosting about 15,000 residents.

The roads in the city, which has six gates, are well laid out.

Residents of the city also enjoy uninterrupted power supply from a 25 megawatts power station constructed by the church out of which only 15 megawatts are consumed.

An auditorium in the City

Every residential building in the city has a prepaid meter.

It also has constant water supply. The city’s water corporation can supply up to seven million litres of water daily in two 1.5 million litres, and four other one million litres tanks.

In the city, there are over 10 educational institutions that cater for primary, secondary and tertiary education needs of the residents.

Not less than seven banks have branches in the Redemption City while recreational facilities for adult and children dot its landscape.

It hosts the annual convention of the church every year.

Worshippers praying at the camp

RCCG was founded by Pastor Josiah Akindayomi in 1952. He died in 1980.

Facilities to be upgraded

Adeboye said the hostel facilities would need to be upgraded because they could no longer accommodate people who come for the annual convention of the church.

About two million members attend the convention.

Redeemed City

The water system and the electricity infrastructure, Adeboye said can no longer serve thousands of people who come to the city every year.

Similarly, the choir section of the new auditorium cannot also cater for the growing number of choristers put at 10,000. According to the GO, there is a need to expand the section of the new auditorium, build more hostels to accommodate people and also expand the altar of the old auditorium.
